Hello Friends!
Can you believe fall starts this week!? I love summer so much, but I do appreciate the changing seasons and the new rhythms that accompany them.
Speaking of new rhythms, one of our Discipleship Pathway classes is about establishing everyday habits that foster a strong faith. From leading with confidence to marriage essentials to the fundamentals of our Christian walk, these classes are opportunities for growth and connection within our Friends Family. If we are going to love God and love people until the valley knows, we need to keep growing in our ability to know what we believe and live it out faithfully.
Last Sunday in our class, we talked about the value of learning—and revisiting—the familiar foundations of following Jesus. An example came to mind from our years as wrestling parents. Our son’s coaches were always exposing the team to strategies and skills that would develop them as young men and competitive athletes. One year, they took the team to a camp known for producing high-caliber wrestlers at both the state and national level. When we got to watch the final day of camp, I expected something advanced and new. Instead, it was simple and methodical: drill the fundamentals, then do it again. And again. And again.
The whole premise was discipline—practicing those foundational movements until they became second nature. That kind of habitual, systematic repetition gave those wrestlers stout mental and physical foundations that were not easily breached.
And yet, when it comes to our faith, how easily we can think, “I already know that. Teach me something I don’t know.” There is something so valuable in returning again and again to what we have been taught. God tells us continually in Scripture to remember. Growing together in study and obedience safeguards us from the consequences of forgetting (which is the entire example of the Israelite nation in the Old Testament).
Let’s pray for one another this week to remain (or maybe become) continual learners, committed to the fundamentals of our faith; forever, hearers and doers of The Word.
See you Sunday!
