September 11th. Where were you that day when you got the news? I was standing in my bedroom getting ready to go pick my son up from preschool. He was 4, my oldest was 8, and my baby was 2. Someone called me and told me to turn on the TV. My husband called soon after and said he did not know when he would be home because, as a state law enforcement officer at the time, he was put on standby for the unknown. I brought my son home, and he asked if a plane was going to crash into our house. We gathered at a friend's house to pray. We watched the news for long intervals of time. The sky was eerily silent as all air travel came to a halt. Remembering might be painful, but it does have purpose. Remembering prompts us to pray for those families forever marked by those days and the long-lasting ripple effects. Remembering humbles us. No matter how mighty we believe our nation to be, we are not beyond tragedy, evil, or attack. Remembering also centers the stories of ordinary humans created in the Image of God, with eternity written on their souls, giving their all so others might live. These profound memories remind us that, even in a fallen world, God is faithful, and His kindness can always be found. As we remember that fateful day 25 years ago, let's pray for those dear ones, for our nation, and then take a moment to remember the gorgeous fact that we are lavishly loved and cared for by the Creator of the Universe - and Jesus is the proof.
